Competency Curriculum

All students in Year 7 are placed in a tutor group. The role of the Learning Tutor is to support and guide each student through their education. All Year 7 students will be undertaking a Competency Curriculum for approximately half of the week. The rest of the time will be allocated to specific subjects such as Technology and Science. The basic principle behind Competency Curriculum is that the change from primary to secondary school can be a challenging one. By providing a curriculum with fewer teachers and fewer classrooms we are managing that change in a staged process so that students do not go from, potentially, one teacher in Year 6 to 22 in Year 7. Furthermore, rather than teaching subjects as separate areas through which we hope to develop skills, the Competency Curriculum turns this on its head and teaches skills (the Competences) by applying them in different contexts.

There are 5 Competences:

  • Citizenship
  • Learning
  • Managing Information
  • Relating to People
  • Managing Situations

A Year 7 student will spend around half their timetable in Competency Curriculum, usually in the Competency Centre, a dedicated building for this subject. Our Competency Curriculum is based on the RSA Opening Minds project and you can find further details on the RSA website.
